5 HUGE MISTAKES ENTREPRENEURS SHOULD AVOID MAKING!!

Entrepreneurship is far from an exact science. It probably is the furthest thing from it. Don’t believe it? Just ask any Entrepreneur! There is one term in the scientific world that may describe us though, an AMOEBA…Single cell (entrepreneurs are usually a one man army starting out) and they have to constantly try to change and duplicate themselves to survive as do Entrepreneurs. The commonality of change is a dish served daily to amoebas and entrepreneurs. The last thing Entrepreneurs should be resistant to is change. With that being said here are 5 mistakes Entrepreneurs should avoid making.   

1.       Staying in bad Business relationships too long: Typically A bad deal will not all of a sudden become a good deal no matter how long you delay making the decision to cut the cord and move on.

2.       Becoming psychologically married to passion not profit: We all have our entrepreneur passions and have heard the cliché’ that we should do something we love and we will never work another day.  The rest of that should say if we pick the wrong passion business over the right profit business we may end getting to know the inside of a bankruptcy court all too well. Be smart about the economy we are in. Insurance may not be sexy but it may make you more money than a smoothie franchise (no offense smoothie people)

3.         Not adhering to the open door concept: We are reluctant to move on to new ventures when one does not work out/fails. We need to move with quickness because when one door closes another one opens. It is not a failure it is a lesson. Your change of life moment is still waiting for you don’t delay.

4.       Forgetting how important you are: Entrepreneurs have been and will continue to be the driving force in the new economy. Always think on a Nationwide/Global scale. This is necessary to grow as far and wide as you are willing to take your company.

5.       Forgetting that the snooze button is not your friend: there are 526,000 minutes in a year and 590 people die per second! You must not oversleep. If you are an Entrepreneur the work will not do itself you must put things in motion daily if you are to reach the success level you want. People say they want things, but the question remains how hard are they willing to work? Is your why BIG enough to prevent you from hitting the snooze button?

These are just a few things to avoid. Just like the amoeba we have to grow, change and adapt to our Business Environment or we risk not surviving at all.

Some people say it s a thin line between love and hate. I think it is a thin line between bankruptcy court and divorce court. When couples meet there seems to be a chemistry thing going on that just won’t quit and each person’s representative shows up on their best behavior. You know the young lady that never passes gas or the young man that always opens the door for the young lady, yeah those two. During this time dreams are shared and faux acceptance occurs when each person expresses their hopes and dreams for the future.

This is a critical time especially for entrepreneurs because if the risk vs. reward is not laid out properly at this stage it can lead disastrous results later into the relationship. In this day and time people have a tendency to get married for better and better not better or worse. Granted no one wants to live in uncertainty when it comes to their financial stability; however a financial meltdown is usually a dish served on a plate that a lot of entrepreneurs may have eat off of from time to time.

This stress along with other entrepreneur issues (time away from family, etc…) can destroy a marriage /relationship, but it does not have to… here are 5 tips on how to avoid an entrepreneur spouse meltdown:

1. Include your spouse into your dream sequence:  Take them from the inception to the stage of implementation. Layout your entire well thought out plan as if you were at the bank detailing your business plan to the finance officer. Ask them to help with simple tasks (project mgmt, etc…)  This will give them a sense of ownership which can lead to better support. The hope here is that they totally buy in. If they do not maybe they will agree to get on board and ride this train with you, at least for a while. Either way move fast the clock is ticking on your business and the relationship.
2. Reciprocation effect: Show a genuine interest in their dreams. We all have one right? If they believe that you believe in them, they will believe in you. Whether it is a job, school, or family it doesn‘t matter – be interested!  
3. Behavior effect: Regardless of how they respond to your program, be everything to them that you would have them be to you. If they are supportive then this will reinforce their behavior. If they are less than enthused then it may turn the tide. It was once said that behavior can be caught like a cold, so get to sneezing!    
4. Rainy Day fund: Please set aside a rainy day fund, at least six months worth so when a financial meltdown occurs with the business (and it will)  you may be able to fend off a nuclear war in the house that will start with something like I told you this was a dumb/bad  idea …
5. Commitment:  Remain steadfast at what you are doing. Most pushback from spouses /partners are rooted in fear. You must be vigilant.  Do not quit…even if it means getting a night job so you can pursue your dream during the day and help cool the “temperature” in the house.

The world  is going to hell in a handbasket and no one seems to know what to do. The Markets are falling around  the world, the US coastline is melting away under the stench of the oil spill. Unemployment is at an all time high. What can we do ?  Well i am glad you asked. The first thing we are going to do is stop whining . Entrepreneurs, this country and the rest of the world for that matter was made great by the Entrepreneur mindset . We are built to think deep plan well and go hard each and everyday.

So  lets’ do it, the rest of the world is waiting on the next great invention concept thought or idea. We do not need to participate in the  negativity of the rest of the world. I need for all of my Entrepreneurs to sit down and relax for a bit. How do you get your checks ? you know that moolah money dinero etc…

Spend sometime thinking about how to incorporate that into the current needs of society. If it does not fit you know what we do as Entrepreneurs , we become Amoebas we adapt to the enviroment and make it  work. If you stay focused on forward thinking you will find your way  back to the light as well as help save the world in the process !!

They say faith is basically the trusting  in advance, of  something that only makes sense in reverse…… That is an interesting thought.. I wish I could have been born looking for a JOB or JUST OVER BROKE which is what that is by the way.. But I wasn’t.. I wish had thought small and in no way shape or form wanted that much out of life…didn’t happen… I wish I had decided not to try out for that team after I was cut before….I became captain of the team…Maybe I should have accepted my coach not promoting one of his best players (me) to college coaches…. I went after and received a full scholarship

When my first business partner destroyed our business with his foolish ways I probably should have quit then…I pushed on…. When I made my own foolish mistakes I really should have quit right ?? No way wasn’t gonna happen.. Even when my loved ones let me Know  in no uncertain terms that “The Thrill was Gone”

and I should just get a job, I was like hell to the naw,  or for my my northern gorillas hell to the no !! (LOL) .   When the repo man paid that late night visit, oh so long ago it was really time to let it go right ?? NOPE gotta moped and kept it moving….

You see God put a DREAM IN ME !!! and I live it, breathe it, drink it each and everyday..It is why i and others like me do what we  do, ENTREPRENEURS, INDEPENDENT BUSINESS OWNERS AND PEOPLE WHO ARE TAKIN CONTROL OF THEIR LIFE IN A NORMAL WORK/CORPORATE ENVIRONMENT  Go after life and our dreams with unbridled passion !! 

If you are a non believer then maybe you like to say you were born with a dream… No matter how you slice it and dice it all of us were meant to be who we are …some of us were meant to change or be changed  depending on our circumstances.

All i am trying to say my Gorillas and Gorilletes DO NOT  let anyone be your  DREAM  KILLER,  you know they are on every corner of the planet..at work, your office and even in your family.  Make big plans small ones do not move mountains nor excite the minds and souls of others..LIve each day as if it was the last because tomorrow is not promised…

So the question remains, WHY DID GOD PUT A DREAM IN ME ??  you know what….. I don’t know why…..but what I do know is NOT TO QUESTION GOD !!!!

When you go to bed tonight  Imagine that you died to day ! R U Satisfied ? Did you call the person you love the most to tell them ? Did you complete the Business deal that you have been meaning to complete ? Have you taken that trip you always talked about ? Did you have the courage to stand up to your boss at work ? what about the banker that keeps denying your loan ? Have you stopped hitting the Snooze button every morning ? Do your kids know that you are proud of them ?  What about your spouse ? RU proud of yourself ? Have you learned to forgive yourself for the  mistakes you have made ? Have you forgiven others that have trespassed against you ? Have you released the anger inside you ? Did you start that Diet that you promised yourself you would on Jan 1st 2009 ? Did you stop sweating the small stuff ? realizing that it is all small stuff…

Have you stopped questioning life and started to live it ? Did you ask that good looking person out on a date yet ? Did you submit that Demo to that record company ? Did you play golf on the course you are most in love with ? Did you ever learn to ask for directions instead of getting lost ?? Did you start that business that you were always going to start ? Did you have the courage  to quit it and do something else if it did not work ?

 Did you make up with your best friend ? you know ,the one that you were angry with but cannot even remember what you were arguing about … Did you make peace with your shortcomings ?

Have you ever Bungee Jumped, Sky Dived, Ran with the Bulls, Drank Tequila in Mexico, walked on a nude beach in the South of France, Climbed MT. Kilamanjaro, Walked on black sand beaches of Hawaii, Searched for BigFoot ,

The Abominable Snowman, Wrestled an alligator,  Been to the Holy  Land, Seen the Pyramids of Egypt or the Mayan Temples, or  SEEN Stone Henge, walked the serengeti, DO U HAVE A PASSPORT, Have you ever left your hometown,  Appreciated a sunset, Drank Coffee made from MONKEY POOP (Kopi Luwak good stuff),  Appreciated a Sunrise, wondered if the moonwalk was real or staged, Did Roswell really happen ? Have you Learned the ways of the Kamasutra ?

 Have you ever said i do not know but i am willing to learn a new language, Have you voted before ? Have you made out a will ? Do you know how ? Are you leaving good insurance to your family ? Have you ever told a Bill collector to kiss where the sun don’t shine ? Have you donated to a charity , Have you told a stranger that you love them ? Have you tried to be compassionate in the face of  HATE , Have you  done your part to make the world a better place ?  

Have you bought or at least test drove a Bentley, Lamborghini Phantom, Mclaren, Bugatti or a Toyota Corolla ??  That you had no intention of buying ?  Have you made the changes in your life that are necessary for you to take your life, hopes and dreams to the next level ???

The moral of the story My Gorillas and Gorillettes  is…… If you pray.. pray that HE wakes you up in the morning.. If you do not pray then  HOPE that you wake up in the morning ….. No matter what your circumstances are,  IF you are Fortunate enough to wake up in the morning get your butt up and do not hit that snooze button and get busy living or get busy Dying because life is short !!

That question was posed to me recently. As a mature Gorilla what would I tell a younger dumber version of me ? I guess this requires some self reflection. A search into demons and angels of the past . The Good the Bad and  The Ugly if you will, I would tell me to live with a sense of urgency…. I would explain to me that tomorrow is too late…. I would explain to me that that you will be older longer than you will be younger so prepare for greatness and begin to execute your plan yesterday…the Snooze button is not your friend….

When you screw up forgive yourself quicker and make amends for mistakes and keep it moving.  I would say get rid of poisonous people at the speed of light as opposed to trying to somehow make someone  ok or restore them because they are in your life …dump’ em quick  ….I would tell me  to work hard now and play harder later ….stop waiting on the song inside you to come out ..start singing it now ..It is up to you to bring it out …if you have a business idea express it instead of repressing it….etc..

WOW lots of things to tell a younger Gorilla (ME)  version of myself….. I could go on and on  but  it would be pointless  because as i would have also told myself .. TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE, GET BUSY LIVING OR GET BUSY DYING… NOW !!!!  I Guess an even better question would be  WHAT WOULD YOU  TELL A YOUNGER VERSION OF YOU ????

I mean Entrepreneur Depression !!! You know that feeling that comes in the middle of the night when your day did not quite go right… The client did not sign the contract, The check was not in the mail after all !! The look on your spouses face when they asked you if the bills were going to be paid on time this month… or may be you are on your 10th Multi level Marketing venture and you quit because as GOD as your witness you are the only one who has not made money in the first 90 days ..ever in all 10 tries !!!!

AHHHHH

I see the light bulb on now… you guys know what i am talking about..for those of you who are trying to catch up ..It is like that gut wrenching call from the bank when they call your loan..or the feeling you get when you look out the window at 3am to see what that noise is and they are lifting your car up on the good ole repo truck ..and you are trying to decide whether to go outside to engage him or SIC chauncey your little chihuahua on him !!! choices choices boy oh boy !!

I will admit to the fact that i have felt some of this darkness surround my eyes and i have felt like i was in a fog at times, because in the past i have allowed my financial well being to become a direct link to my mental well being ..a lot of entrepreneurs and business people do that everyday… If money is in the bank we are the greatest people in the world to be around …..If the account has negative 20.00 bucks in it you are ready to chew nails and kick a puppy ….. You are not alone.

My Gorillas Stand up!!! do not give way to such feelings….. lean on each other in this forum and others like it. It will feed your soul and we as entrepreneurs need that more than the average person. We are unique..we are the innovators and in today’s economy we are going to be the new world order soon enough in leading this economy back to some form of stability in the future !!

Trust me when i tell you that…. things are changing before our very eyes… but stand fast do not succumb to the pressure, remember that while pressure can break a steel pipe ..It can also turn coal to diamonds and force peace talks between countries at war !!!

you have been complaining, whining, and  talking about your change of life moment seems like forever  !! your friends who support you know ,marginal friends know, and everyone in between knows. We should make sure that while we are talking about that day that we are ready to be who we say we are .

we sometimes get caught up in the thickness of thin things..which means we talk so much about something to the point that we just like to hear ourselves speak about the success that we  want but do not really believe it is going to happen….  and  when it does happen ..the phone rings ..that big deal is on the phone the one you have spoken about for ages ….

what do you do ?? too many of us lay an egg in this scenario…..The people who do this are chimpanzees.  My Gorillas stand up !! Be prepared to receive this blessing …stay sharp and focused make sure you are well versed on your craft make sure you have your people in place and make your dream happen
